Toure: Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ will never happen again

Yaya Toure believes the standard of the current English game means the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ season “will never happen again”. Arsenal memorably went the 2003/04 Premier League season unbeaten en-route to winning the title, with only Preston in 1888/89 managing to match that feat in the English top-flight. Former Gunners trialist and current Manchester City midfielder Toure believes that the emergence of competitors to the elite in the likes of West Ham and Leicester mean that such a feat will never be repeated, however. “The Premier League is always improving and you see how the big clubs invest in players for a lot of money and this sequence in football – the Invincibles – it will never happen again in the Premier League,” Toure told the Guardian. “All the teams are spending money, buying big players. Like West Ham, even Leicester, Stoke spending on players from Barcelona. You can understand how the Premier League is so competitive because all the players want to come to England and want to improve, and want to play well. It’s difficult, the Premier League.” Turning his attention to City, Toure insists that Manuel Pellegrini’s men have little to worry about despite two defeats in a week, including a home loss to West Ham which spelled the end of their own unbeaten run in the league. “Sometimes it is just about luck,” Toure said. “We played well against West Ham but we were unlucky again – the same as against Juventus.

Smalling: The philosophy is finally sinking in

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling says that Louis van Gaal’s philosophy is finally getting through to the players, and credits the manager for improving his game.
Smalling has been one of United’s best players this season, yet to miss a single minute in the Premier League or Champions League. He is also getting closer to holding down a first-team place for England.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Smalling says that Van Gaal’s training methods are responsible for this increase in his performance.

“Yeah I think he [Van Gaal] has improved me, all the coaches I’ve worked with have helped me, especially Louis van Gaal.
“We work hard and tirelessly on the training ground with our tactics, we do 11 versus 11s a lot so we know our positions and our roles down to a tee.
“The repetition has really improved my game and a lot of the other players as well.

“The manager said at the start of the season that once you’ve been with him for six months and got used to the repetition of drills, the tactics and you know your role that we will get better.”
Despite concerns over United’s style of play under Van Gaal, Smalling also feels that there has been significant improvement this season.
“Whoever comes in knows their job. We have the training routine and the philosophy of the manager so every player knows what he wants and what he expects of you on the pitch.
“It’s very clear to us as players what we need to be done come matchday. We started this season a lot better than we did last season and we can see an improvement.”
That’s very true, with United only taking five points from their first five matches last season. That said, this still feels like a job in the early stages of progress. They head into the game against Southampton with five wins from their last 14 away league games, and also lost in Eindhoven in midweek.

Pedro 'has Barca doubts'Sergio Busquets admits that his friend Pedro could be forced to leave Barcelona in order to play first team football, with Manchester United reportedly interested in his services.

First team opportunities for the 27-year-old forward appear limited at the Nou Camp where Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez led the Catalan giants to the Champions League and La Liga titles last season. Pedro has been linked with a move to Old Trafford following the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao in recent weeks. And Busquets said at a press conference in San Francisco: "I have spoken with Pedro. "I think that as a team-mate and friend, I would like him to stay for a long time but I understand that he has doubts. "He wants to play but there is a lot of competition. In our team we have the best players and it's very difficult. "I hope he stays but the decision is his." Pedro joined Barcelona's youth team as a 17-year-old and went on to win La Liga five times and the Champions League on three occasions.

Rangers bid for Scott Allan rejected by Hibernian – Sky sources

The reported approach from Rangers comes only three days before the teams meet in the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup. New Rangers boss Mark Warburton was at East End Park at the weekend when the 23-year-old scored a spectacular opener against Dunfermline. Last season’s Championship player of the year returned to Scotland last summer on a two-year contract after falling out of favour at West Brom. He rediscovered his form with the Edinburgh club and recently paid credit to Hibs manager Alan Stubbs. "Obviously after my experience down south I have taken on board why I wasn’t playing and I feel I have put that right this year," Allan said in May. "I have managed to kick on and, like I say, Stubbsy has given me that platform to go and play. "I needed a manager to have faith in me and know my strengths. And Alan Stubbs has been that for me."

Can Fifa end child trafficking from Africa to Asia?

Fifa made a little-noted amendment to its statutes earlier this year but it was one that deserved considerably more attention. Football's world governing body decided to lower the age limit for international transfers to include players aged 10 and above. That's right: 10. Before the change was introduced in March, clubs only needed to go through the official process of applying for an International Transfer Certificate if their target was at least 12 years old. "The executive committee decided to reduce the age limit… due to the increased number of international transfers of players younger than 12," Fifa told the BBC in a statement. 'Unscrupulous' But what happens when clubs simply start recruiting six, seven and nine-year-olds to bypass Fifa's new red tape? Well, if that does happen, Fifa says the age limit "could be reconsidered" if it detects a trend of players even younger than 10 being transferred. Nonetheless, the change of the rules highlights the growing problem of the illegal movement of minors.
